Every summer we arrange dozens of transfers from Tirana Airport down to the southern beaches. And almost every week, someone books a hotel in Ksamil or Saranda first, then asks us how far it really is. The answer tends to surprise them.
The Albanian coast is worth the trip. But it sits a lot farther from the airport than most arrivals expect. This guide lays out how to get there, what each option costs you in time and comfort, and when a pre-booked transfer earns its price.
Quick answer: the best way to reach the coast from the airport
- Durrës: close enough that a taxi, shuttle or private transfer all work fine.
- Vlora: a private transfer starts to make more sense, especially with luggage or a late arrival.
- Dhërmi, Himara, Saranda and Ksamil: plan this as a long transfer, not a quick airport hop.
- Bus: the cheapest way, but airport departures and schedules vary by destination and season.
- Private transfer: best for families, late flights, luggage and direct door-to-door travel.
The coast is farther from the airport than it looks on the map
Tirana International Airport (TIA, also called Rinas) sits about 17 km north of the capital. From there, the central coast is close. The southern beaches of the Riviera are not.
Here is what the drive actually looks like in summer, with traffic factored in:
- Durrës — about 30 km, roughly 30 to 40 minutes. The closest beach to the airport.
- Shëngjin — about 65 km, around 1 hour. North of the airport.
- Velipojë — about 90 km, around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30.
- Vlora — about 150 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. The gateway to the Riviera.
- Dhërmi — about 230 km, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours over the mountains.
- Himara — about 250 km, roughly 4 to 4.5 hours.
- Saranda — about 260 to 280 km, roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours depending on route and summer traffic.
- Ksamil — about 290 km, usually 5 to 5.5 hours.
So the central coast near Durrës is a quick ride. But if your hotel is in Saranda or Ksamil, you are looking at half a day in the car. That single fact changes which travel option makes sense.
Your options from the airport to the coast
Do not assume there is a simple airport bus to every beach town. Some seasonal or bookable services may run from Tirana Airport to places like Saranda, but operators, schedules and pickup points change. For many coastal spots, especially outside the busiest summer dates, you still go via Tirana or arrange a private transfer. Here is how the real choices compare.
The bus: cheapest, but not always simple from the airport
The cheapest way south is usually by bus. For some destinations and dates you may find direct or semi-direct airport services, especially to Saranda in summer. For others, you first take the airport shuttle into Tirana, then catch a long-distance bus from a city terminal.
That makes timing the real problem. Buses run to fixed schedules, can take five to six hours to Saranda, and may not line up with your flight. If you land late, the last useful departure may already be gone.
It works if you travel light and have time to spare. It works less well with lots of luggage, kids, or a tight onward plan.
The furgon: even more local
A furgon is a shared minibus. It leaves when it fills up, not at a set time, and it follows informal stops. Locals use them all the time and they are very cheap.
For a first visit with bags, though, they are hard to plan around. You cannot really pre-book, and the lack of a fixed departure makes connections from the airport a gamble.
Renting a car: where it backfires
Renting feels like freedom, and for some trips it is the right call. For the long drive south, it often creates more problems than it solves. Two come up again and again.
The luggage and fatigue problem. You land after a flight, pick up a car you do not know, and then face four or five hours of driving on unfamiliar roads. Most people underestimate how tiring that is. Summer traffic near Fier and the coastal towns makes it slower than any map predicts.
The mountain road problem. To reach the Riviera you cross the Llogara Pass. It climbs to 1,027 metres and is the highest point on the coastal road. The views are some of the best in the country. But it is a long series of tight switchbacks, and driving it for the first time, tired, with a full car, is hard work. Add one-way drop-off fees and the hunt for parking in packed beach towns, and the savings shrink fast.
A pre-booked private transfer: when it makes sense
A private transfer is a car booked for you alone, with a driver who meets you at arrivals and takes you straight to your door. No terminal changes, no timetable, no driving the pass yourself.
It is not the cheapest option, and we will not pretend it is. But for the long southern drive it tends to win on what matters most after a flight: door-to-door comfort, room for luggage, and a fixed pickup even at 2 a.m. For families and small groups, the price per person becomes more reasonable once the car is shared, especially when you count luggage, door-to-door pickup and late arrivals.
This is the part of the trip we handle every day, so our Tirana Airport transfer service is built around exactly these long coastal drives.
Why the long southern drive changes the math
For a 40-minute hop to Durrës, almost any option is fine. Take the bus, grab a taxi, rent a car. The stakes are low.
The calculation flips once the drive passes three or four hours. Every transfer you add, every fixed departure you have to catch, and every kilometre of mountain road adds friction at the exact moment you are most tired. That is why the same traveller who would happily bus to Durrës usually books a private car to Saranda.
Late flights make this sharper. If you arrive in the evening, onward public transport south for that day is often finished. A pre-arranged ride waiting at the terminal removes the worst case of being stuck at the airport overnight.
Coastal transfers we drive most
These are the trips our drivers cover most often through the summer. Each link opens the page for that drive, with details for that destination:
- Tirana Airport to Saranda
- Tirana Airport to Ksamil
- Tirana Airport to Vlore
- Tirana Airport to Dhërmi
- Tirana Airport to Himara
- Tirana Airport to Durrës
- Tirana Airport to Shëngjin
- Tirana Airport to Velipojë
A few practical tips before you travel
- Match the option to the distance. Short drive north or to Durrës, keep it simple. Long drive south, plan it properly.
- Check your arrival time. Evening landings cut off most onward public transport for the day.
- Count your bags. Two people with large suitcases fit a sedan. A family of four with beach gear needs more space, so say so when you book.
- Build in a buffer. Summer traffic around Fier and the coast is real. Add time rather than cutting it fine for a ferry or check-in.
- Confirm the pickup point. For a private ride, your driver waits inside arrivals with a name sign, so you skip the taxi queue.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Tirana Airport to Saranda?
Plan for about 4.5 to 5.5 hours in summer. The distance is roughly 260 to 280 km, and traffic near the coast can stretch it.
Is there a direct bus from the airport to the coast?
Sometimes, for selected destinations and dates, especially Saranda in summer. But there is no simple airport bus network to every beach town. Many trips still mean going via a Tirana terminal, so check the current schedule close to your travel date.
Can I rent a car at the airport and drive to the Riviera?
Yes, cars are available at TIA. Just plan for the Llogara Pass, one-way drop-off fees, and limited parking in busy towns before you decide.
Is Uber or Bolt available in Albania?
Uber is not available in Albania, and Bolt is not something visitors can rely on for airport-to-Riviera trips. Local taxi apps exist in Tirana and some cities, but for long coastal transfers a pre-booked car is usually the practical choice.
What is the closest beach to Tirana Airport?
Durrës, at around 30 minutes by car. It is the easiest coastal town to reach straight after landing.
How far in advance should I book a transfer for the coast?
In peak season, the earlier the better. Send us your flight details and dates and we will hold a car for your arrival.
Heading to the coast this season? Send us your flight number, your destination, and how many travellers, and we will send back a fixed quote for the drive, whether that is a transfer to Saranda or anywhere else on the Riviera. No timetable to catch, no pass to drive yourself.
